Private Naropa University is located in Boulder, Colorado. In honor of the 11th-century Indian Buddhist scholar Naropa, an abbot of Nalanda, it was founded in 1974 by Tibetan Buddhist teacher Chögyam Trungpa.

Instead of calling itself Buddhist, the university describes itself as ecumenical, nonsectarian, and influenced by Buddhism. Naropa University promotes unconventional practices like meditation as a complement to conventional teaching methods.

The North Central Association of Colleges and Schools accredited Naropa in 1988, making it the first academic school with a Buddhist aesthetic to earn regional accreditation in the United States.

The university is still one of very few such institutions. The Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at Naropa University has hosted a few Beat writers.

Chögyam Trungpa, a Karma Kagyu and Nyingma lineage holder and exiled Tibetan tulku, founded Naropa University. Trungpa arrived in the United States in 1970, started the Vajradhatu movement in 1973, and opened the Naropa Institute under the Nalanda Foundation in 1974.

Initially, the boards of directors for both Vajradhatu and the Nalanda Foundation were nearly identical. They developed into more distinct institutions throughout the ensuing years.

Additionally, during the inaugural summer session, Trungpa requested poets Allen Ginsberg, Anne Waldman, Diane di Prima, and composer John Cage to locate a poetics department at Naropa.

The Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics was named by Ginsberg and Waldman, who shared a residence that first summer. The first official degree programs at Naropa University were presented in 1975–1976. These comprised a BA in Buddhist studies and visual art, an MA in psychology, an MFA in visual art, and certificates in dance, theater, and poetry from the expressive arts department.

An expansion of Trungpa’s Maitri program, a 16-week meditation course held in Connecticut that was based on Vajrayana teachings on esoteric energy patterns within the mind and body, was how the MA in psychology was initially conceived.

Trungpa also requested that Marvin Casper redesign the Maitri program so that it may be used at Naropa University as a full-fledged graduate degree program in contemplative psychology.

Casper went on to lead that division and oversee the editing of two of Trungpa’s books. The original requirements for the degree included three summer sessions at the institute, two Maitri programs in Connecticut, and a six-month independent project.

Naropa’s leadership made the decision to apply for regional accreditation in 1977 at Trungpa’s suggestion. The North Central Association of Colleges and Schools accredited Naropa Institute in 1988 after more evaluation trips through 1986.

Additionally, Lucien Wulsin was requested to lead the board of directors by Barbara Dilley, president of Naropa, in the middle of the 1980s. Separating Naropa and Vajradhatu in writing was one of Lucien’s first deeds.

Connections to Vajradhatu were further weakened by Trungpa’s death in 1987 and the actual move of the organization’s primary center to Halifax.

John Cobb, a Harvard-educated lawyer and active Buddhist, was hired as president of Naropa in 1991 by the board of trustees. In July 2009, Stuart C. Lord succeeded Thomas B. Coburn, who held this position from 2003 until 2009.

When the university invested in new equipment to examine respiration, galvanic skin response, and heart rate variability from 2012 to 2014, it began doing electrophysiology research at The Graduate School of Counseling and Psychology.

Later, in order to research Electroencephalography (EEG) and track brainwave patterns,

Jordan Quaglia, Ph.D. developed the Cognitive and Affective Sciences Laboratory in 2016-2017.
